With hundreds of options available it can be overwhelming to choose a new camera. This class will help you navigate the process. This class is designed for the ‘almost ready to buy’ student.
We will start with the basic principals of digital photography, then help you navigate the purchasing process, and finally help you get started with your new toy
Prerequisites:
- You must have a working knowledge of your computer operating system and file systems.
- You should be ready to buy your new digital camera (know your basic budget limits!)
Lesson 1 -- Film vs digital
- What will you miss from film? What is new?
- A fast overview of all the cameras that are out there (Big, big list)
- Let’s talk about your budget
- What do I like in pictures?
- Includes a fun pictorial survey
Lesson 2 -- Why do I want a camera?
- Very basic lesson on how camera’s work.
- Figuring out what type of digital you need
(not talking brands yet, but narrowing down types)
- Take ‘the camera matchmaking survey’ designed to help you narrow your choices
Lesson 3 -- Help (and links) on reading non-partial reviews
- How to gather and understand opinions from friends and strangers
- We will cover ways to ‘test drive’ your camera
- We will end this week by narrowing down to your top two
Lesson 4 -- This week your homework will be to buy a camera
- Help making your final decision
- Type of accessories will you need (preparing for the new baby’s arrival)
- Where to buy? Online vs stores vs some guy on the street?
- Where not to buy?

- Learning to ‘see’ through your camera – or how to start thinking like a photographer
